Who is Ascent Best For?

Ascent provides student-focused loans, and borrowers qualify even if they don’t have any credit history or income, as long as they meet certain requirements.

With Ascent student loans, borrowers have two options: cosigned loans and non-cosigned loans. The cosigned student loans make sense for students who plan to pay off loans quickly and have a cosigner (someone who can guarantee the loan). This option has lower interest rates because the cosigner assumes the legal responsibility of repaying the loan if the signer cannot pay.

The second option, the non-cosign loan, is only available to students in their junior or senior years or graduate students with a minimum GPA of 2.5. This option accommodates borrowers who lack any credit history, income, or cosigner.

Loan Rates & Terms

Ascent offers flexible repayment options to help serve the needs of different students and their financial situations. Ascent student loans has a range of lending options available including:

Cosign student loans:
- 5, 10, or 15 year variable-rate loans
- 5 or 10 year fixed-rate loans

Non-cosigned loans:
- 10 or 15 year variable-rate loans
- 10 year fixed rate loans

Cosign loans range from $2,000 up to $200,000, but the loan amount cannot exceed the total cost of tuition. Cosigned loans start at $2,000 up to the total cost of attendance.

Whichever loan you apply for, Ascent doesn’t charge any application fees, origination fees, disbursement fees, or prepayment penalties. APRs start 4.19%. Prior to accepting a loan, applicants should check the terms and conditions since APR varies based on an individual’s eligibility.

All loans have a 6 month grace period. Ascent also has a deferment or forbearance option which allows borrowers to temporarily stop paying federal student loan payments or to temporarily reduce the amount you pay.

Application Process

Students can complete the application process for an Ascent student loan entirely online in four easy steps:

Step 1: Complete the online application
The online application requests information such as income (if applicable), school, personal contact details, and requested loan type. Ascent doesn’t charge any fees to apply.

Step 2: Select Loan Offer
Ascent student loans provides a number of loan offers which borrowers can choose from including cosigned and non-cosigned loans.

Step 3: Upload Documents
Ascent allows applicants to submit all necessary documents digitally.

Step 4: Approval
If approved and certified, borrowers receive funding.

Ascent student loans consider a few things when deciding on whether or not to approve an applicant. The student loan company looks at information such as the applicant’s credit score (if applicable) as well as your school, program, graduation date, major of study, and cost of tuition.

Although Ascent has loans available to applicants without a credit history, students that apply for a cosign student loan require a minimum credit score of 550. Cosigners on loans must also have a minimum credit score of 660.

Solo applicants (in some cases) and cosigners may need to earn at least $24,000 in annual income and have worked for at least two years. Applicants must also meet an undisclosed monthly debt-to-income ratio.

Keep in mind that those who apply for a loan without a cosigner must be in their junior or senior year or a grad student. In any case, non-cosign loans require a minimum GPA of 2.5.
